reflections, healing, and letters to self

When did money become more important than people?

There have been many moments in my life where I have found myself in disbelief over current local news or the realization of the repetitive nature of any given atrocity. You think as you get older, they’ll affect you less or not likely to catch you off guard anymore. However, what I’ve come to find is this world will break your heart over and over again. I refuse to believe that mankind is truly this despicable and evil but it is getting harder to gauge the goodness in the world when a far majority would rather be a passive bystander to evil or injustices than to show others real support or care. I know that compassion fatigue is real and I know how feelings of hopelessness can take over and make someone be on self-preservation mode. I view that as a necessity especially in an increasingly unfair and unjust world.

I’m also aware that people have a tendency to only care if they’re being directly affected — the “it’s not my battle, that’s theirs” mentality, even when by and large, they are being affected. Unity and power in numbers can favor real change, yet it seems society can never seem to get it right.

Those in power have money, power, and greed at the forefront of their minds and have given us a sense of how ugly the world can truly get..

I wonder.. when did money became more important than people? I wonder how we became so accustomed to injustice that it begins to feel like background noise rather than a call to action. Healthcare has turned into a business and taken on a world of its own. You could have health insurance and simultaneously not be insured for current health diagnoses. You have to call a prospective health insurance company to ensure they cover the medication YOU NEED. Incredible! God forbid you’re uninsured and you need an ambulance here in the states —you’ll be hit with a bill for thousands of dollars.

While at the same time, there are many practices that offer reduction rates for those who are self-paying. A game of business indeed. Health is no joke though and it is unfortunate that this is a normalized reality that we’ve had to reckon with. Those fighting for their lives should not have to be burdened with losing their life savings or debt.

I can look at so many other industries and still see a common theme.

I do not have much of an audience or a subscriber count on here but I would love to discuss ways this world could be a better place. I know that we as people individually can make a difference, but what changes specifically do you want to see happen? Whether it’s for reducing crime, environmental impact, etc. I am interested in your thoughts and hopes for the world..
